PIV stands for Positive Input Ventilation. This is an airflow system which operates within buildings, used to bring a steady stream of filtered, fresh, and condensation-free air into your home.
PIV Units are particularly useful for preventing mould growth. By filtering the air that comes into your home, the system prevents allergens, toxins, and mould spores from settling in your house. By bringing that fresh air into your house continually, the PIV unit prevents condensation, stops mildew from spreading, and helps your family to breathe better.

While a Positive Input Ventilation System brings a continuous stream of air into your building, a Mechanical Extract Ventilation System does a similar job in a different way.
A PIV unit operates by bringing fresh air into the home and removing old air through one centralised place. An MEV unit typically operates in a similar way (Centralized MEV) but can also operate through multiple entry points (Decentralised MEV).
MEV units use extractor fans to draw out stale air, primarily from the wet rooms in the home. PIV units expel that stale air through continuously pumping fresh air in, until the stale air has nowhere to go but outside.
PIV Units provide a continual stream of fresh air into the home. You have limited control over this. It does not heat your home. Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Retention systems, on the other hand, come with flexibility of control, the ability to heat or cool the air at your whim, and the choice of zoning particular rooms.
MVHR systems also deal in heat retention so that less energy is lost, contributing to lower utility bills. PIV Units do not all have the capacity to heat although this modification can be added. Both come with DIY installation options for your ease.
Dehumidifiers do a similar job to PIV systems, usually in modular or single unit form. Dehumidifiers can be portable and moved from room to room. PIV units are installed and are therefore sedentary.
PIV units tend to see use throughout entire buildings, while dehumidifiers concentrate on specific areas.
